Soolantra cream contains the active ingredient, ivermectin. Ivermectin is used to treat parasitic infections like scabies and worms, but it is also effective in rosacea. We do not know exactly what causes rosacea, but it has been linked to inflammatory processes and Demodex mites. These parasitic mites cannot be seen with the naked eye. They live on the skin and may cause irritation leading to the symptoms of rosacea. Ivermectin has anti-parasitic properties which target the Demodex mites, but it is also anti-inflammatory. Rosacea is characterised by redness, spots and thickening of the skin. These symptoms mean that the skin is inflamed. Soolantra can help to reduce the inflammation and redness associated with rosacea.
The most common side effect of Soolantra is a burning sensation on the skin after applying the cream. Other side effects include: skin irritation, itching, dryness or a worsening of their rosacea. Side effects may vary from one person to the next, as with any medication. You should always read the manufacturer’s Patient Information Leaflet (PIL) using this or any other medication.
