Colofac contains the active ingredient mebeverine , an antispasmodic. It works by relaxing the muscles in and around the gut. This helps to relieve the symptoms associated with irritable bowel syndrome. It is a well-tolerated medication that is used extensively in the treatment of patients with IBS. IBS symptoms can include stomach pain and spasms, bloating, flatulence, diarrhoea and abnormal stools.

Colofac is generally a well-tolerated medication with few unwanted side effects. Some people may also notice a skin rash or red, itchy skin after taking the tablets.
