Doxycycline works by killing off the parasite at the blood stage of its life cycle and is highly effective against Chloroquine-resistant strains of the disease.
Common side effects include: sensitivity to sunlight, nausea/ vomiting, headaches, shortness of breath and rashes. Less common but more severe side effects can include an allergic reaction, severe rash, difficulty breathing, stomach ulceration and severe diarrhoea. Side effects may vary from one person to the next, as with any medication. You should always read the manufacturer’s Patient Information Leaflet (PIL) before taking this or any other medication.
