Levonelle contains the drug levonorgestrel. Levonorgestrel is thought to work by stopping or delaying ovulation. It may also prevent sperm from fertilising an egg that may have already been released. Levonorgestrel only works if taken within 72 hours of unprotected sex. Levonorgestrel’s effectiveness is significantly reduced if taken 72 hours or more after unprotected sex. For this reason, it should not be used if unprotected sex was over 72 hours prior.
Common side effects include: nausea, tiredness, headache, irregular bleeding until next period. If you vomit within 2 hours of taking Levonelle you should take another dose because it may not have worked. Side effects may vary from one person to the next, as with any medication. You should always read the manufacturer’s Patient Information Leaflet (PIL) before taking this or any other medication
