Ovestin cream contains the active ingredient estriol. It is a type of medicine called Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT). The drop in oestrogen levels in the body that happens after the menopause can cause vaginal problems. After the menopause, the decline of oestrogen levels in the body can cause menopausal symptoms like vaginal dryness. The active ingredient in Ovestin cream, estriol, acts as a substitute for the lost oestrogen. By replacing the lost oestrogen, it can help to relieve symptoms like dryness, irritation, pain during sex, and recurrent infections.
Ovestin can cause some vaginal side effects such as vaginal discharge, bleeding, or spotting. It can also cause itching or irritation in or around the vagina at the start of treatment. This usually improves after several weeks of use. Other possible side effects include swollen and tender breasts, headaches, and nausea. Side effects may vary from one person to the next, as with any medication. You should always read the manufacturer’s Information Leaflet before using this or any other medication.
