Finasteride works by blocking the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone that heavily contributes to male pattern baldness. Lower DHT levels in the scalp allow hair loss to stop and hair to regrow. Because DHT is primarily a male hormone Finasteride has only been proven effective and used in men. Propecia/ finasteride works only on the scalp not the rest of the body.
