Sumatriptan belongs to a family of medicines called triptans. Triptans are a second-line treatment for migraines. They are used only when required and when traditional painkillers (e.g ibuprofen, paracetamol) are not effective at treating your migraine. Triptans like sumatriptan seem to work to reverse these temporary changes in the brain. They are thought to work by causing a narrowing of the blood vessels of the brain, which may swell during a migraine.
Common side effects include: Drowsiness, dizziness, feeling hot or cold, flushing of the face, nausea and vomiting (may be related to the migraine), tingling or tightness in your face, arms, legs or chest, unusual feelings of heaviness in your arms, face, legs or chest pain. Side effects may vary from one person to the next, as with any medication. You should always read the manufacturer’s Patient Information Leaflet (PIL) before taking this or any other medication.
